I received the following question yesterday about our clinic’s new “at-home” cold laser therapy devices. The question pertains to if they relate to treating scars.

Dear Dr. Todd,

Those laser things you have for home use, are they something you can use to minimize scarring? I was reading your facebook posts about where your daughter had been hurt & you lasered her face while she slept. I wondered if the ones you sell for home use are used for that also or what they are used for?!?!?

    Thanks for asking. For acute scarring, there are 3 lasers that my clinic owns (which cost me $3,600, $1,700, & $750) that I find work best. We also have much better, faster results with new scars than let’s say a scar that’s been there for 20+ years.

    Yes, when my then 9 month old daughter had 15 severe facial lesions, I used 3 of my cold laser devices on her at night, while she slept. Two of the lasers were best to not use around a child who had her eyes open. So these sleeping LLLT (low level laser therapy) treatments worked out perfectly in her case. We did between 8 and 10 treatments over a 2 week period. Also evidence of any scarring had totally resolved within 2 weeks!!!

    Here is where I need to enter my little disclaimer as to not upset the US FDA:
    Some of the cold laser devices in question are FDA cleared (approved) for osteoarthritis of the wrist and hands, while others are approved for pain and / or inflammation of a musculoskeletal origin. Since there was obvious pain and / or inflammation in my young daughters case over most of her face, this is what we were treating her for! Nothing else.

    With that being said, the little $30 at-home lasers are not FDA cleared (approved) for treatment of anything, otherwise they’d cost a heckuva lot more than $30! This is where good ole’ common horse sense trumps silly laws, regulations and clearances.

    The at-home cold laser device is pretty much the same wavelength of light (635 nanometers as compared to 650 nm), just 10 times less powerful, than my $750 cold laser device. This translates into: what I can do for a patient in 3 minutes, it would take the patient at least 30 minutes to duplicate at home.

    So in conclusion, the little cold lasers that I sell are probably not going to heal up a 20 yr old scar by their lonesome, but they definitely wouldn’t hurt anything.

    We always need to remember that the first rule of cold laser therapy is:
    when laser light photons meet unhealthy cells and tissues, they (the photons) produce a healing effect.

    It doesn’t matter what kind of cells or tissues are involved OR if they are musculoskeletal or located in a wrist. Once again, this is where common sense prevails!!!

    Of course, with chronic scarring, some gradual improvement over a period of months wouldn’t surprise me. I’ve found the at-home lasers to be helpful for the following as well (although once again, they are not FDA cleared for any of these things):

    • acupressure point work
    • more superficial (up to 1 cm deep) muscle, tendon & ligament issues.

    • I don’t think I don’t think Overlap was a problem on my hand I think how well it works vareis wildly from person to person, and I think it doesn’t work as well on men.

    • I have heard different opinions but to me it was deadly.. each and every shoot was paaaaaainful, I almost jumped from the chair after every shooting.
